A patient run and a round of smooth jumps were key as Edwardstone scored wide success in the Close Brothers Henry VIII Novices’ Chase under Tom Cannon to earn quotes ranging from 8-1 to 12-1 for the Arkle.

There was a point when Third Time Lucki threatened to flee their rivals after a spectacular jump into the open ditch on the back straight.

But the further the race went, the more Edwardstone warmed up to his task, as the leader’s race ran to the penultimate, War Lord ran to catch him close for second place.

Registering a first freshman victory, Cannon was extremely cool on a horse whose economical and sure jump belied his previous record of completing one of three pursuit starts.

“The horse really speaks for me, he was brilliant,” said Cannon. “He was a bit of a novice at one or two years old, but he only ever had one chase start completed, so he was going to be [novicey].

“[He put in a] Good jump two, then I gave him pressure all the way to the last and he cleared well. “

Coach Alan King had a memorable 2021 year on the flat thanks to the exploits of Trueshan and Asymmetric and again welcomed his first Grade 1 winner in jumps since the Royal Seal won the award in 2017.

King said: “He has a great cruising speed. I’m delighted with him. He was progressive over hurdles and we tried him on fences last year. He stalled at Doncaster and it was too late to go. keep going, but his form has returned. Hurdles last season were as good as ever, he was still hoping to make a chaser.

“We had a good boost of confidence the last time around. I didn’t really want to come here. If I could have found a two mile penalty I probably would have gone somewhere else, but they weren’t there. “

King won back-to-back editions of the Novice Two Mile Championship at Cheltenham in 2006 with Voy Por Ustedes, then My Way De Solzen in 2007, and is hopeful that Edwardstone may be the horse to bring him back to this sacred place.

“He’s bred for a trip but doesn’t need more at the moment,” King said. “He had three pretty quick runs so it’s a nice problem to have now.

“I hope and think it’s an Arkle horse, so we’ll be working backwards from there. The Kingmaker would be ideal, but he’ll probably want a race in between.”

War Lord had progressed from the success in a graduation chase at Carlisle for Colin Tizzard and Brendan Powell and had a fine race to pick up the pieces late after being unable to go at the start of the fierce gallop.

Harry Skelton said of Third Time Lucki: “It’s a pretty tough endurance test for him, Cheltenham suits him better.”
