Fernando Alonso’s incredible racing debut in 2011

the Formula 1 the season resumes this weekend as the roadshow heads to sunny Spain.

The Circuit de Catalunya awaits teams and drivers as the title race begins to heat up.

Red Bull seems to have finally regained some reliability and Max Verstappen Slowly chops off the head of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Verstappen is yet to finish lower than first in a run he finished this season and, if that form continues at Barcelona and beyond, he could be back at the top of the standings in no time.

However, with Verstappen and Leclerc’s battle already proving to be a showdown, you can be sure Spanish fans will be rocking to see one man and one man only.

While Carlos Sainz will be filled with some love everything Fernando Alonso this weekend will be greeted with loud cheers and adoration.

As one of the greatest sportsmen of all time, Alonso always arrives in his home country amid a storm of fanfare and joy.

However, this season Alonso will be asking even more of the home fans having scored just two meager points so far.

Even with Alonso at the wheel, the Alpine has struggled to match its rivals in terms of speed and is already proving somewhat disappointing this season.

We are a long way from 2011 when, sitting behind the wheel of a FerrariAlonso produced one of the best starts you could hope to see.

Taking advantage of the long descent into the first corner of the Barcelona circuit, Alonso instinctively jumped and weaved before jumping the two Red Bulls to dive inside.

It was a game of a few centimeters but Alonso kept his composure to pull off the superb double overtake which you can see in the clip below:

Brilliant – those embedded images are something else.

Fast forward 11 years and Alonso will be desperate for a change of fortune to kick off his stormy season.

We can only hope that Alpine can pull themselves together and give the man a car worth driving.
