Formula 1 | Capito confirms Williams F1 were interested in Piastri for 2023 season
If Oscar Piastri will end up driving for McLaren F1 in 2023, Alpine was at some point considering sending him out on loan and Williams was among the teams considered to welcome the Australian.
Asked about it in Zandvoort, Jost Capito, the CEO of Williams F1, confirmed that his team had indeed had discussions on the Australian with Alpine earlier this year.
“We spoke to a few drivers for 2023, so we had a few options. And of course, Oscar could have been one of them. But it was still late in the season, to see who was available for next year. »
Otmar Szafnauer, the director of the France team, confirms that “We had discussions. And like Jost said, we really considered them, but that never happened in the end. So it’s hard to know if it would have been in the end, but there were certainly discussions. »
Nicholas Latifi could still keep his seat for 2023 according to Capito, but that will force him to perform better.
“He has to show his potential. I think he has it as he proved at Silverstone and in Hungary. He was very good there, while last weekend was less good, but he has another chance this weekend to show what he is capable of. »
As for Nyck de Vries, who had driven the FW44 during free practice in Barcelona, Capito wishes him to arrive in F1 but he kicks in touch when asked if the Dutchman was among the candidates for the vacant seat.
“Nyck had done a great job for us in FP1. Since we worked together last year, he has become a friend. So I have a very good relationship with him and I think he deserves to be in Formula 1. If he will be there, I don’t know. »
“Nyck is a very fast and very focused driver. And he knows what he wants. »
