Hamilton aims for fifth Russian Grand Prix victory
The rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen peaked at the Italian Grand Prix last week when Verstappen crashed into Hamilton, sending his car just over Hamilton’s head. The two were unable to continue the race, which allowed Daniel Ricciardo to secure his first victory since 2018.
Formula 1 heads to Sochi this weekend for the Russian Grand Prix, and Hamilton has a chance to overtake Verstappen in the drivers’ standings if he manages to secure his fifth career victory on the track.
Verstappen currently sits first in the drivers’ standings with 226.5 points, and Hamilton is just behind him with 221.5.

You might be wondering why Verstappen is ranked third on the odds to win this weekend list at +450. This is due to a penalty imposed on him due to his reckless driving which resulted in the crash with Hamilton last week. He was penalized three grid places, meaning he will be forced to lose three grid places from where he finished in the qualifying rounds.
This means that even if he finishes qualifying with the fastest lap, he will have to start in fourth place on Sunday.
Red Bull team manager Christian Horner isn’t too concerned about the penalty.
“We also have the grid penalty for Max to take, but in Sochi it’s not such a handicap because of the force of the tow up to turn 1,” said Horner. “I was watching the results of the Russian Grand Prix and in 2018 Max went from last to first before he had to make his pit stop. We were second there last year, but it’s a circuit we’ve never won… I can’t wait to be there and see how we do.
Meanwhile, Hamilton will look to win on the track for the fifth time in his career, with his last victory in 2019. Valtteri Bottas won the race in 2020.
