How F1 seeks to conquer the United States
The United States Grand Prix will take place at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas on October 21. This will be F1’s second race in the United States this year and three are scheduled for 2023. We are witnessing an important moment for the sport as they attempt to conquer America.
The Miami Grand Prix was held in May. Championship leader Max Verstappen won that race and is still leading the standings. The race was the first Miami Grand Prix that took place and it was a great success.
Shortly before that race in Miami, even bigger news broke for American F1 fans. In November 2023, a night race will take place in Las Vegas. That will mean three races in one season taking place in America.
This is an important step for F1. They may run races all over the world, but it’s success in the United States that will be the icing on the cake for them. Recent years have seen them gain strength in the Middle East, while growth is now happening in the United States.
But can it be a success? There is opposition from NASCAR, so turning Americans into mass F1 fans won’t happen overnight.
It is not just the holding of races in the United States that helps to increase the popularity of the sport in the United States. Netflix is also playing its part with the docu-series “Formula One: Drive to Survive”. It proved to be a big hit and one of the main reasons that US viewership for F1 reached record highs.
That being the case, it’s not too surprising that the F1 calendar embraces America. A series like this is a great way to introduce racing drivers to the American public.
It’s not just about cars speeding down a track. People also need to know more about pilots. Fans should know the personalities of the sport and the rivalries that take place between drivers and teams.
F1 has wanted this American expansion for quite a while. 15 years ago there were big changes in the sport when Bernie Ecclestone handed over his control of the sport to the Liberty Media Group. They are based in Colorado, so it was inevitable that American expansion would be part of their future plans.
The behind-the-scenes coverage was their first step in achieving this goal. There hadn’t been much of that shown while Ecclestone was the man in charge. An increased presence on social media has also taken place. It’s vital because it’s the way to go when promoting events these days.
The last decade has been dominated by Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton. This dominance has not always created the greatest races. Those days however seem to be over with the rise of Max Verstappen, Ferrari getting stronger (something any Italian-American will delight in) and Mercedes now in the role of trying to get stronger in order to compete.
Progress is being made but there is still a long way to go before total success is achieved. Will three races a year soon become four or five? The opportunity to do just that may be there and if 2023 turns out to see American fans flocking to all the races and betting online using the latest betting promotions, maybe that’s what will.
