McLaren Racing – Hungarian Grand Prix 2022
Hungaroring, Sunday July 31
Hear from McLaren Formula 1 drivers Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo and Team Principal Andreas Seidl after the Hungarian Grand Prix.
How it happened
• Lando kept his place at the start, fending off a challenge from Hamilton at the first corner. Daniel fell two places, leaving behind Magnussen at P11
• Daniel picked up P10 from Magnussen
• Lando lost three places on the straight, with Hamilton, Verstappen and Perez all passing him
• Lando went down on round 15 for mediums and came back P12. Daniel stopped a lap later for the same tire and joined P16
• Lando passed Zhou and Bottas, moving to P7. Daniel jumped Alonso and Ocon in turn two, for P10. He dispatched Zhou soon after, earning 8th place, just behind Lando
• Lando took Hards on lap 43, returning to P9. Daniel moved to the Hards five laps later, joining P12
• Daniel was given a five-second penalty for contact with Stroll, dropping him to 15th at the flag. Lando retains 7th place, ahead of Alonso

“P7, happy with that. After yesterday, of course, we all would have liked a bit more, but we just didn’t have the pace today with the fastest cars behind. We did a very good job yesterday I’m “I’m happy, it’s the maximum we could do today with the cars in front. Difficult in places but seventh was the best we could do for points today, and we were ahead of our rivals.”
|fastest lap||1m23.654s on lap 64 (+2.204s, 17th)|
|Pit stops||2, turn 15 [Soft/Medium] (2.8s) and lap 46 [Medium/Hard] (2.1s)|
“Unfortunately, there have been more lows than highs. The launch went well, but I crashed a bit after that and was almost in the middle of braking into turn one. I felt like I was in a decent position, but I remember an Alpine coming high out of the first corner and I had no room, so I had to get out of there, otherwise I was going to lose a wing. I lost momentum in second and ended up on the outside of turn two as well. So it was a bit of a mess in the first lap. Then the Soft really fell apart and I had nothing left on that tire. The Medium was a little better. I was able to do a nice double move on the Alpines, which was fun. I managed to hold Stroll back a bit on the Medium then when we came out on the Hard, and he came out on a Soft, we just had no grip. I tried to avoid contact but couldn’t and unfortunately I hit him, spun him around and got a penalty and then that was it. The Hard didn’t work for us, I never really got to make it work. I’m looking forward to the break, of course, and I’ll try to come back with a bit more speed in the second half of the year.
“With all six cars from the top three teams finishing the race, seventh place was the best we could achieve today – and we did. The upgrade we introduced at Paul Ricard – and improved our understanding here – put us in position to be the fourth fastest team which is a great achievement Lando ran a clean race today to take this seventh place but with the same strategy on the side of Daniel, we struggled to generate grip in the last stint on the hard tire and he fell out of the points.
“It’s something we will have to look into in the last week before the summer shutdown. Many thanks to everyone on the track, at the factory and to our colleagues at Mercedes HPP for the immense effort so far. Everyone should go and enjoy the break, recharge their batteries and come back stronger for what should be an exciting battle in the Constructors’ Championship.
