Race against climate change: Nokian Tires launches a sustainable innovation challenge

Nokian tires launches an innovation challenge to recreate the future of driving. The FAST RACE, BIG CHANGE challenge is an open competition inviting startups, companies, students and academics to innovate for more sustainable tires. Finalists will be offered the unique opportunity to present their idea to Nokian tires legendary White Hell tire testing center in Lapland – during a lap on a test track. The winner will have the chance to collaborate with R&D experts from Nokian Tires to bring their idea to life.

Finalists have a ride to change the future

In the race against climate change Nokian tires accelerates innovation for the most durable tires yet. The open competition FAST RACE, BIG CHANGE aims to find new solutions to make tires more durable. The winner of the challenge will receive a prize of E10,000 and the opportunity to explore a business or development partnership with Nokian Tyres.

From all the applicants, a group of finalists will be chosen. The finals will take place on April 7 at the Nokian Tires Ivalo Test Center White Hell, located in Finnish Lapland, some 300 km above the polar Circle. Speeding on a test track in an electric vehicle driven by a Nokian tires test pilot, they must convince the jury of their innovation with a one-lap pitch.

Ambitious goals to be achieved by 2030

Nokian tires has set ambitious sustainability targets: by the end of 2030, 50% of all raw materials used in tires will be recycled or renewable, and production-related CO2 emissions will be reduced by 50%. In January 2022, Nokian tires presented Nokian Tyres’ Green Step concept tyre. It’s a masterpiece of sustainable innovation with its ambitious design made from 93% recycled or renewable materials. The concept tire has brought the company closer to the goal and the FAST RACE, BIG CHANGE challenge will help to reach the finish line.

  • Tires have nearly 30 different components and more than 100 raw materials. This means that there are hundreds of opportunities for greener innovations.

  • FAST RACE, BIG CHANGE finalists have the unique opportunity to visit our test facility in Lapland and pitch their idea to a panel of judges from industry and academia.

  • The winner will have the chance to explore a business relationship with Nokian tiresto cooperate with the best innovative minds of Nokian Tires R&D experts to turn their idea into reality, bring their work to public attention and a monetary prize of 10,000 E.
