Team Lakay Standout reflects on the experience of the ONE Atomic Weight Grand Prix
- Jenelyn Olsim reflects on three-round affair with Ritu Phogat in ONE Atomweight GP
- There were times when she had Phogat in danger, but the latter’s sense of struggle stood out
- Olsim says his next fight would most likely be against Jihin Radzuan
Jenelyn Olsim of Team Lakay was in a thoughtful mood addressing the media following her loss to Ritu Phogat in the semifinals of the ONE Women’s World Atomic Weights Grand Prix.
The International Business Times was able to ask the heavy Muay Thai fighter what her game plan was in the fight and what was wrong.
“What I had in mind then [going into the fight] was to focus on my strike in the early laps but Ritu Phogat’s wrestling is on another level which is why she was able to defeat me easily. My save plan was designed specifically for the ground, forcing Phogat to submit as I really needed to finish the fight if I wanted to win. said a thoughtful Olsim.
The 24-year-old was brought in to replace Itsuki Hirata who had to withdraw from the fight due to an illness unrelated to COVID.
At first, Olsim was able to prevent some of Phogat’s attempts to withdraw, pissing off the heavy wrestling fighter from India.
It would only be a matter of time for Phogat to find the right opening to defeat Olsim and make his way to dominant positions.
Olsim was able to take Phogat by surprise by threatening her with several attempts at submission throughout the fight and forcing her to get back on her feet.
The 2019 Southeast Asian Games silver medalist in Muay Thai was on the verge of getting locked in a choke triangle as the first round drew to a close, but Phogat made it through and resumed his ground.
An armband attempt in the second round and another triangular choke in the third round were about as much offensive as Olsim could muster after “The Indian Tigress” forced the fight to stay on the ground.
When asked about her next fight, Olsim revealed that she believed ONE Championship would have her fight in an atomic weight fight against her original opponent in Jihin Radzuan.
But being the fierce fighter that she is, team star Lakay is also hoping to return with Phogat after her brief run in the Grand Prix.
