Top Comedy Series Emmy Contenders – TV Talk Podcast – Deadline

Comedy is today the subject of this week’s edition of Deadline’s podcast, TV Talk.

Deadline TV critic Dominic Patten and awards columnist and chief film critic Pete Hammond are in the race for the Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series, where the Apple TV+ juggernaut Ted Lasso is looking for a double after winning the category in its first season last year.

Box Reservation dogs enter the race on their first lap, or Great in his second, or Grace and Frankie in his seventh and final year? And about Calm your enthusiasm? Isn’t it already high time for Larry David? We talk about all that and more in our chat, and also listen to some of Hammond’s conversation with director Barry Levinson and star Ben Foster about the heartbreaking HBO film. The survivor.

Listen now:

Granted, it’s not uncommon to see shows repeat themselves in the winner’s circle year after year. In fact, ABC modern family won the award five years in a row, followed by multiple wins by HBO’s VIP. However, it seems that over the past few seasons, voters have wanted to split the wealth with single winners of Best Comedy Series like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Fleabag and Schitt’s Creek, the latter pair winning the top prize for their first and only time in their final seasons.

Are we looking at a realistic knockdown against the presumed favorite Ted Lasso? If so, we assume that HBO Max hacks might be ready to do it, having already beaten Lasso for Writing and Directing Last Year’s Comedies at the Emmys (in addition to her Comedy Lead Actress win for Jean Smart). This could be an indicator that hacks, a last-minute entry into the 2021 race, could be on course to really take over with its equally acclaimed late second season.

We also advise you to look for a possible spoiler with Hulu’s first season hit Only murders in the building with Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. The mystery-comedy series will strategically kick off its second season on June 28, ahead of the mid-July Emmy nominations and perfectly positioned to be seen as the final voting begins, making it a top priority for voters.

Past Emmy Favorites Atlanta, Barry and Maisel return to the game this season to make things even more interesting, while the broadcast network’s greatest hopes may rest on ABC’s season one breakout. Abbott Elementary School or the eighth and final season of Emmy Bridesmaid Blackish, who to date has only won one Emmy for hairstyling, but has always been nominated in the Comedy category.

TV Talk airs every Thursday during Emmy season.
