Thirteen years after India’s first Formula 1 race, the country will host its first-ever Formula E race on February 11, 2023 in Hyderabad.

What exactly is Formula E and how is it different from Formula 1?

The concept of Formula E was born to demonstrate the potential of electric vehicles and alternative energy solutions through motorsport. In other words, it’s a green alternative to Formula 1. In 2014, Beijing hosted the first Formula E race. Since then, it has become the world’s first all-electric single-seater international championship.

But there are other things that make Formula E racing stand out.

Unlike Formula 1 cars which run on petrol, Formula E cars run exclusively on electricity. The Formula 1 car runs on a 1.6-liter V6 turbo engine accelerating to 15,000 rpm and can reach speeds of 220 MPH. In Formula E, the single-seater car is powered by a 200 KW battery and can exceed a maximum of 140 MPH.

A Formula 1 Grand Prix race takes place over three days, with days set aside for practice and qualifying before the final race. But in the case of Formula E, it’s faster – practice, qualifying and the final race all take place in one day. A Formula 1 race is usually held on a specially designed racing track, known as a circuit.

And building those circuits can cost millions. But Formula E does not require the construction of dedicated circuits. The race takes place in some of the busiest city centers in the world.
