The annual duck race at Whitworth was held on New Years Day this year and was a great success.
The popular event had 2,121 sponsored ducks at this year’s event which takes place at the overflow of Cowm Reservoir in Tong End.
About 500 people came out that day to support the growing local event.
The ducks were launched at 1 p.m. by Whitworth councilor David Chorlton, chairman of the tourism and recreation committee, with support from committee member Mark Ambrose.
Sponsor of the first duck (number 2088) on the line was Hannah Buckley who won £100, with second place (number 2103) taken by David Barker with a prize of £75 and third place (number 1677) of £50 issued to Dave Sneaton.
The last duck (number 551) to waddle was sponsored by Pete Crook who received £10.
The Duck Race is organized by Whitworth Town Council Tourism and Leisure, with all proceeds going directly to tourism and leisure events in the town. This year the duck race has raised over £1,600 for community events.
Councilor Chorlton said: “It was, as always, a fantastic event that really blew away the hangover from the previous day’s celebrations. This year the weather was a real blessing, as was the ability to run the race live.
“Thank you to everyone who showed up that day and to everyone who sponsored a duck as it really helps us continue to host events and improve tourism in the community.”
